First edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Quest for Certainty: A Study of the Relation of Knowledge and Action by John Dewey (Minton, Balch & Company, 1929). From the Gifford Lectures, 1929. Very rare true first edition of this iconic lecture on philosophy, education, sociology and understanding. Blemish to center of front cover which appears to be a rubbed area where a stain possibly once was. Mild scuffing elsewhere to boards and with corners bumped. Binding is split in a few gutters nearby beginning and end of book, though all pages are attached and spine remains fairly straight. Previous owner’s personal library stamps to endpapers and top/bottom outer edges of text block. Otherwise, all pages are clean and unmarked though tanned. See photos for condition.
