“Published in Washington, DC, by the American Federation of Arts. An important issue of this arts magazine with 2 illustrated articles in a special section on "Africa and American Art." One of the articles was written by Alain Locke, an influential black scholar at Howard University and the acknowledged dean of the Harlem Renaissance and the "New Negro" movement of the 1920s and 30s. The two articles appear on pages 201-220 and are entitled: The American Negro as Artist. By Alain Locke, Professor of Philosophy, Howard University. A consideration by Locke of the influences and development of African American art from its "childhood period" to "the advent of a representatively racial school of expressionism" in the early years of the 20th century. The 2 articles include 23 reproductions of painting and sculpture.”
