The British Mk3 Turtle Helmet was a steel combat helmet introduced by the British Army in 1944 during World War II. Its design marked an improvement over the earlier Brodie helmet (Mk1 and Mk2). The helmet was called the “Turtle” due to its distinctive, more rounded shape, which provided better protection for the sides and back of the head compared to its predecessors.

Key features of the Mk3 Turtle Helmet:

• Shape: The helmet had a deep, domed shell resembling a turtle’s back, giving it its nickname.
• Material: It was made of manganese steel, providing good ballistic protection.
• Liner: The interior had a padded liner for comfort and shock absorption.
• Chinstrap: It featured a three-point chinstrap, improving stability and fit.

The Mk3 was mainly used by British and Commonwealth forces, especially during the later stages of WWII, including the D-Day landings. It was eventually succeeded by the Mk4 helmet, which retained a similar shape.
